The Montreal metropolitan area has a population of nearly 4 million, making it the largest city in Quebec (and the second largest in Canada, after Toronto). It has been consistently rated among the world's most livable cities and has been given a number of honours over the years. For instance, UNESCO has named it a "City of Design", meaning it has a rich creative design and architectural environment. Many media outlets have acknowledged Montreal as a remarkable city due to its culture, architecture, welcoming outlook, and economic stability. People move to Montreal from within Canada and from around the world because it offers great employment opportunities in a very liveable city. Being the business centre of Quebec, there are numerous top multinationals, businesses, and manufacturers based there.

Montreal is justly celebrated for its ethnic diversity. There are a number of neighbourhoods in the city, including a China Town, a Little Italy, and a Little Portugal. These neighbourhoods ensure that Montreal gets a taste of foods, cultures, lifestyles, and arts from around the globe. The culture of Montreal is quite rich itself. The city has a number of art galleries with great works of art on display. You will be delighted by the public art installations found on the streets downtown and in other areas. The city plays host to a number of yearly festivals and cultural events, including the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the Just for Laughs Festival, the Montreal World Film Festival, and others. And Old Montreal, the city’s historic centre, always fascinates visitors with its old world charm.

Another important fact about Montreal is that it is the second largest French-speaking city in the world, behind only Paris. Such is the prominence of French that 66 percent of residents use it as their primary language. However, English is spoken widely, too, and other languages are used in their respective neighbourhoods. Learning a little French will come in handy, though, because all of the street signs and public notices are posted in French.

The climate of the city sees some large temperature fluctuations. The summers are pleasantly warm, reachinghighs of 35 degrees Celsius. The winters, on the other hand, tend to be cold and wet, and there is usually a lot of snow. The city is experienced at handling it, though, and the roads and residential streets are cleared quite rapidly and efficiently.

There are several factors you might consider if you are choosing a neighbourhood to live in.For example, you might look at commute times and schools. You might also base your choice on your ability to speak French. After all, language will play an important role in getting to know the neighbours and local businesses. Rosemont and neighbouring areas are dominated by francophones, whereas Hampstead, Notre Dame de Grace, and Westmount are mainly English speaking. Other areas in the city, such as Plateau or Mount Royal, are effectively bilingual.

As for accommodations, you can easily find apartments for rent in Montreal on the Internet; luckily, Montreal is also known for its affordable renting options, so when you find the part of the city that suits you best, you can probably find yourself a place there.
