There is little worse than going to be feeling tired, if not exhausted, but then finding that sleep eludes you. As you toss and turn you start to feel too hot and then you find that the sheets become wrinkled and uncomfortable. Every noise you hear seems to be so very loud. You just cannot settle. You simply cannot get comfortable. You are tired and yet incredibly and alarmingly wide-awake.

Your thoughts seem to whirl around your mind, every so often interspersed with an ever more desperate plea that you should soon be allowed to sink into a deep and blissful slumber. As the silvery light of dawn begins to show through your drapes you can feel your muscles sagging in defeat. Not soon after that you assess your face in the bathroom mirror and the black circles beneath your eyes reflect yet another night of torture.

Sleep deprivation is indeed a form of torture. People who have not suffered from insomnia simply cannot fully appreciate the level of discomfort experienced. Sleep is a necessary part of our life and provides both body and mind with many essential restorative benefits. Without sleep both mind and body are running on a very thin thread of human battery power.

Most people are lucky enough to be able to take sleep for granted. It just happens. They go to bed and are asleep within moments of their head hitting the pillow. Others might need to read for a few minutes to settle their mind in preparation for sleep, or have a hot drink before going to bed or other such familiar routine.

Others however are not so lucky. The number of people who suffer from insomnia is of epic proportions. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke between 40 and 60 million Americans per year suffer from sleep disorders. There are a huge number of people who are struggling to operate their daily lives upon a foundation of severely limited power.

Many people either do not like to take medication or experience difficulty in finding medication that suits them in a way that is 100% satisfactory. There are many things that you can incorporate into your lifestyle in terms of habit changes or herbal remedies and if you suffer from insomnia you have probably tried most of them by now.

There is one natural treatment for insomnia that few people think to even consider and this is hypnosis. Hypnosis is frequently misunderstood. It is also often confused with sleep, not least because even the word derives from the Greek God "Hypnos", the God of Sleep. The important fact for insomniacs to note is that hypnosis helps you to get to sleep. Hypnosis is a state of mind that paves the way for your mind to sleep.

Hypnosis is a natural state of relaxation. It also provides an altered state of focus, enabling you to shut out distracting and unwanted thoughts and observations. With hypnosis you also have access to your subconscious mind, the part where automatic thoughts and behaviors are stored. Thus suggestions can be made to embed an expectation that you will automatically return to natural patterns of sleep.

In effect hypnosis can be employed to relax and retrain your brain to sleep when you need to. And this can be done in the majority of cases simply by listening to a hypnosis mp3 download designed to assist in overcoming insomnia.

You will find that there is a considerable body of medical evidence that supports the use of hypnosis as a successful and easy treatment of insomnia. You might like to check out the subject in Wikipedia, the British Medical Journal or in PubMed.
